A key difference between a paragraph and an essay is that an essay begins with an introduction. The introduction should be at least three sentences long and the "topic sentence" - or "thesis statement" - is the final sentence.

The structure of an introduction is as follows. You have:

1) The Hook
A powerful, specific anecdote, statistic or quote that "hooks" your readers into reading the essay

2) The Transition
The sentence that moves from the quote or anecdote to your thesis statement

3) The Thesis Statement
The thesis statement tells the reader what specific reasons, findings, arguments, causes, effects, comparisons or contrasts you will use to support your view.
