The Transition

A transition simply moves the reader from the hook to the thesis statement as quickly as possible.

If I write, "Last year, a nine-year-old boy from Chicago jumped to his death off a nine-story building because a video game convinced him he could fly."

After that, I need a transition to my thesis statement.

"That nine-year-old boy wasn't along. Each year, video games have been blamed for ruining lives, causing violence and even nurturing killers."

After the transition, I go into my thesis statement.
