The Essay Introduction

Become an Essay Master with EssayMaps

A key difference between a paragraph and an essay is that an essay begins with an introduction. The introduction serves that same purpose as the topic sentence. With the topic sentence, however, you make your point in the first sentence; in the introduction your make your point in the last sentence.

The introduction should be several sentences long and the "topic sentence" -- or "thesis statement," as it's called -- is the final sentence.

The structure of an introduction is as follows. You have:

1) The Hook
2) The Transition
3) The Thesis Statement

Each of has a pretty standard format. Let's write your hook.
