How do You Use EssayMaps?


The layout of EssayMaps is simple. The first row consists of outlines for various academic essays and formats. The second row consists of the full paragraphs and essays in mirrored form.

Before you begin, though, read about the hamburger paragraph or essay, which is the basis of EssayMaps.



If you click on the term "Basic Paragraphs" in the first row, you see a dropdown menu that will bring up a form to fill in key words for the outlines.



If you click on the term "Hamburger Paragraph," you will get questions to fill in to create a finished paragraph.



The outline key words will in the correct boxes in the line in the finished paragraph. When you hit "save-to-word," it will produce a complete, formatted outline.



If then go to the second row, where there are full paragraphs, and hit "hamburger paragraph.



When you do, the terms from the outline appear in the correct places in the hamburger paragraph form.



EssayMaps also includes dropdown boxes that allow you to insert the appropriate transitions.



This allows you to write a complete sentence for each term, completing a paragraph.



If you move to the Long Paragraph tab in the second row, the sentence you wrote in the first paragraph appear where they should in an extended paragraph.



In this way, at each step, the sentence you've written already are stored in your browser's cache and appear in the appropriate places as you move toward a complete essay.

Practice writing an essay each day, using the form. By doing that, you really come to understand how essays are structured and can master the academic essay, in all its forms.

The best way to get a sense of the structure of academic essays is to pick a very simple topic -- for instance, "My Role Model" -- and start with the five-sentence hamburger paragraph. Progress through the hamburger essay.
