An introduction consists of three parts: a hook, a transition and a thesis statement, which is much like a topic sentence.

The hook is a powerful, vivid sentence that hooks the readers. It may includes statistics, quotes or a specific powerful anecdote.

The transition takes the reader from the hook to the thesis statement.

Unlike topic sentences, thesis statement should always be direct, with the reasons, causes, observations or arguments listed in the order they will appear in the essay.
