The Essay Introduction

Become an Essay Master with EssayMaps
One key difference between an essay and a paragraph is that an essay begins with an introduction.

The introduction servers that same purpose as the topic sentence, but it's a bit backwards. With the topic sentence, you make your point in the first sentence.

The introduction can be several sentences long and the topic sentence -- or "thesis statement" as it's called -- is the last sentence.

The structure of an introduction is as follows. You have:

1) The Hook
2) The Transition
3) The Thesis Statement

Each of this has a pretty standard format. To begin crafting your introduction, let's start with the hook.
